Making a start on Føroya (Færoes) After a long time of thinking about it - I finally decided, and managed, to find time to travel to travel there and spend a few days in Tórshavn the capital city.
Of course to reach the Færoes you have to travel either by air or by sea. I flew to their international airport which is on the neighbouring island of Vágar - it was built by the British Army during the war of 1939-1944. I flew from Copenhagen and enjoyed the flight which was some two hours in duration. There was a pleasant breakfast - and as the airline (Atlantic Airways) is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2008 - we all got given cake and champagne - we all of us who are old enough to drink that is.
The view of the Færoe Islands, as we made our way to Vágar, was quite excellent - the Atlantic looked fresh and the islands had a light dusting of snow. I have to admit to being a little bit of a softy about when it comes to snow. We never seem to get enough of it for my liking.
On arrival at Vágar Airport, the customs officials - one man and his dog literally sniffed out anything illegal. The many guides which deal with travels to the Færoes seem to be slightly out of date - and talk about veterinarian certificates and the like. Many changes have taken place - but check the tourist and government websites before travelling. For all those who fish, your tackle still needs to be washed and disinfected but you are now put on trust that you have done this.
Although the islands are small of population and located in the remote North Atlantic - international travel does take place. Aircraft use the airport on Vágar and oddly enough the airport is known as Vágar Airport.
The views are wonderful and even from the ground outside the terminal at Vágar - the hills surrounding it are impressive. |
| | Travelling from Vágar There are other ways to get to and from Vágar (both the airport and island) - you can use a frequent helicopter service to a range of the islands that make up Føroyar or you can take a car or a bus and use the tunnel system. The road network off the island is a toll road.
You see quite a bit of scenery when travelling from the airport then you enter the tunnel - so no real sea views after that. |
