The Castle above the town | the entrance to the castle |
The castle is impressive and these images do not do it justice. It was never defeated in battle, however during the 30 years war - it was surrendered to the Swedes.
The Swedish army captured the count of Weissenberg's wife and Schloss - it was swapped for the more militarily important castle! It must have been love? |
| | Crossing the moat The moat is now home to deer - which are breed by the museum staff. The moat is hexagonal in shape, and over the centuries it has been added to and built upon.
It was indeed quite interesting to see what was a moat now being used for something other than protecting the structure and it's inhabitants. |
| | The castle walls The image shows the back walls to an inner element of the castle.
During World War 1, it was used as a Prisoner of War camp by the Imperial German army. One of the more famous residents was a certain French army Captain - Charles de Gaulle. Although he tried to escape, it was never a sucess - his height of almost 2 metres was always a problem.
He did manage to get as far as the local train station during one escape attempt; however his height was a give away. there did not seem to be any tall local men for him to be confused with during war time. |
