In memory of Monsieur Gustave Eiffel; his famous tower was initially built at the entrance of the World's fair of 1889. Eiffel initially had a permit for it to stand for 20 years; however now in 2009 it has become the world's largest paid visitor attraction.
This is of course the symbolic image of Paris, if not France. We all know what this is when we see images of the structure. There has been much comment about the structure itself, and initially it was badly received. However today, the view tends to be one of appreciation and approval.
There are several levels which can be visited by tourists; and I have to say it does offer an excellent view over the city.
Paris is a city that never seems to sleep. This has been said about other cities, such as London or New York. However, I personally believe that this statement is truly justified of Paris.
I do enjoy walking through the streets and especially enjoy those darker evening when it may be slightly wet and rainy. There is a unique quality then brought to Paris.
I have made quite a few visits to Paris over the years, both flying and using the Eurostar train service from London in recent years.
My first visit was made by travelling by College minibus in the early 1980s; we were returning home to Scotland and drove from Dijon on that occasion.
With some trips to Paris, the time is short and you never seem to get enough done during your visit. However I have tried to visit Montmartre on many of my visits. It does seem to offer something, which other districts of the city do not offer. There is the mix of culture from the artists, the history of the area and of course the fact that Sacré-Cœur Basilica is on the door step.
