Taba

Salah el Din Castle on Pharaohs Island
Taba is in the South Sinai governorate in Egypt and lies on the east coast of Sinai on the border with Israel and across the Gulf of Aqaba from Saudi Arabia.

There is no real settlement in Taba, just a few hotels on the border, notably the Taba Hilton, and then some 10 - 20 km further south, more hotels in the Taba Heights area, ( Hyatt, Marriott and Sofitel ), with more along the coast all the way down to Nuweiba.

The scenery is amazing with spectacular rock formations of over 1000 metres high leading down to the sea, interspersed with pretty little coves and bays.

The sea itself can be very deep in parts, and I have seen a five netres shark in the water between the castle and the neighbouring beach. Fortunately I wasn't in the water at the time but on the small ferry that plies between the island and the beach on the mainland.

Getting to Taba

The nearest airport to Taba is located some 30 - 40 km away on the Sinai Plateau.

The airport is now known as Taba International Airport.

If driving from the airport, or from Cairo which is a further 400 km or so away, you will pass through some fanstastic scenery as you pass from the plateau down to the sea through a long winding canyon.

To the south one winds along the coast road to Nuweiba and then onto Sharm el Sheikh.

More views of Taba

Relax and enjoy the views.

And they are truly superb, like the Fjord some 20 km south of the Egyptian - Israeli border.

This is where I was sleeping one night a few years ago whilst watching the Leonids shooting stars !

Please can you help. We are looking to go to the Sonesta Beach Resort in Taba in 2007, but have a disabled son in a wheelchair. Can you let us know if there are taxis that will be able to transport his wheelchair (It doesn't fold as flat as an adult one)
