General Tips: What's the average living standard in Beijing?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: My friends often come up with this question, it's very hard to answer. You may have some idea from this figure:

"Beijing Statistic Bureau" has released an official data , it says the average personal income(net) for Beijinger in 2003 is RMB24,045(about USD2900,mixed employed with un-employed) .

My personal view is : General speaking , RMB 6,000 per month for a double income family could lead a comfortabel life if no house and car mortgage, above RMB10,000 per month under the same condition can enjoy a easy life , average expendure will be affordable.

I have heard many complains from my friends , saying the life for expats could be very expensive, sometimes double , triple than local standard. I agree .

The gap between rich and poor are getting larger and larger , this is why you can see so many luxury cars on road while in the same time you may also find many people biking(It's a mean of tranportation, not for fun)

Living and touring in beijing could cost more than your expectation . Be well prepared!

Sally is giving good advice here! I live in Beijing and can tell you that a first time visitor who rents a car (there is now a counter in the parking garage at the airport) is CRAZY!!
