Scotland has always been a place of mystery to me. Ever since I first learned about the tale of the Loch Ness monster, I was intrigued. Photographs of Scotland seem to always be of castles and foggy mountains and I was interested to see how the real thing lived up to the photographs.
The weather in Scotland in May was quite pleasant. While we did encounter many days of rain, the temperature was very mild and we did see the sunshine every-so-often.
The country is very accessible by car and if you feel comfortable driving on the "wrong" side of the roads and car, you should consider renting a vehicle. There is a lot to see in Scotland and most of it is spread out over vast countryside, so plan on a lot of your time being spent traveling. However, like we did, you could plan to see a lot while crossing the country to get from major city to major city. |
Quicks Tips/Suggestions PACK RAINGEAR! And if you plan on hiking at all, bring many layers of clothing because the weather can drastically change in minutes, especially in the mountains.
Here is a general travel tip: Use the internet! I planned our entire trip without having to talk to a single person on the phone. A lot of times travel information places either don't have complete information or are so busy with other customers that you can't use them as a resource to your full advantage. If you plan ahead of time using the internet, you can plan your driving maps and create your itinerary for every day of your trip before you even step off of the plane. |
Best Way to Get Around We flew from Southampton to Edinburgh with British Airways. The flight was very short and comfortable and the price was fairly reasonable.
As I said above, I would recommend renting a car. We rented from Alamo, but because we had to have an automatic car we got stuck with a very big car which was their only automatic left. Luckily, my husband had become very accustomed to driving a large car in England, so it was no problem. All of our Bed and Breakfasts had parking available, which was a big help, especially in Edinburgh. Another great thing about our time in Edinburgh was that their bus system is quite extensive and reliable, so we were able to leave our car at our B&B the entire time we were there. |
