Offseason Barcelona

Barcelona's Arc del Triomf
Gaudi's architecture rules the city. Many of the sightseeing attractions revolve around his work, but there are also many other non-Gaudi things to see. If you like churches, Barcelona is a great place to see many different styles of them, from the modernist Sagrada Familia to the gothic Barcelona Cathedral and everything in between.

The city has many parks, which contain museums, lakes, fountains and interesting local life.

A day trip to the Montserrat Monastery is a MUST! However, leave yourself plenty of time to explore the mountains surrounding the monastery. There are funiculars that can take you up and down them.

Barcelona's coast is full of nightlife and deep blue waters, Port Vell is a great place to shop, see a film or go to a club. As with most European cities, the biggest attraction can most always be to just sit in an outdoor cafe and enjoy the sights and culture. No matter what time of year, Barcelona will certainly keep you busy!

Quick Tips/Suggestions

The only exposure to Barcelona I ever had was during the 1992 Summer Olympics. I remember seeing Gaudi's Sagrada Familia lit up at night, and that is about it. When a friend from college and her husband began planning their trip to visit us in England, we decided that a side-trip to Spain would be in order.
My friend is fairly fluent in Spanish and we thought it would be a great chance to travel to Spain with someone who knows the language. Now, if you are familiar with Catalonia at all, you are probably laughing at that statement. Because, you may know, Barcelona is a Catalan-speaking area of Spain. Spanish is their second-language. And as we quickly realized upon arrival, it is a very different language! However, most of the signs are in both languages and we actually encountered many people who spoke fairly good English. At no time were we completely lost with the language difference.

Best Way To Get Around

We flew from London-Gatwick with Easy Jet for a mere ?50 per person round-trip. Our flight arrived in the Barcelona airport around 10pm, so it was quite empty. We followed the signs to the train, where we found the train which goes to the Sants-Estacio station along Barcelona's city metro system.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can only pay for the train ticket with cash, so have some with you when you get to the station. I think it was about 2 Euro per person for a one-way ticket. On that note, most places which deal with tourism in Barcelona do not accept credit cards. But there are ATM machines all over the city, so cash is easily available.

The food was OK but someone on staff stole my credit card number. I know it happened at this restaurant because it was the only place I used that card.
