SO many people have written about how dangerous it can be in Rome with all of the pickpockets and beggars around. Before going there, I had read literally hundreds of people's journals who warned about Rome's dangers. It got to the point where I was scared to go there. I have travelled all over and have never felt uncomfortable in any place that I have visited before. But something about these peoples' warnings affected me.
I was so afraid that I was actually thinking about going out to buy a money belt and other usually unnecessary tourist-precautions. In the end, I ran out of time before the trip to go out of my way to get these things.
I NEVER felt unsafe in Rome. Let me repeat that...
I NEVER FELT UNSAFE IN ROME!
My husband and rode the subway and buses freely during day and night. We walked dark streets alone near our hotel. We sat in piazzas late at night with the locals. It never occured to me to carry my bag in any certain way or to try to blend in because I never felt like there was any threat!
Sure, Rome has beggars and thieves. But so does EVERY big city! I never behaved any certain "safe" way when I was living in Chicago or London and Rome wasn't any different. Just keep your wits about you and remember that you are in a large city and you will be fine. There is no reason to avoid visiting Rome because of someone's travel journal which deems it unsafe.
Romans were some of the most friendliest people I have ever encountered. Please don't let other tourists' stories scare you!!
