Prague in Winter

by cas_twemlow - last update: Apr 13, 2004

Gemma in Old Town Square
I took my sister to Prague for her 21st birthday present. We had such a great time there, even if it was -14C! The people were very friendly, the architecture was beautiful and above all it was VERY cheap! (I spent ?80 over three days and I was by no means stingy!). I couldn?t believe that it cost us 12Kc (about 24p) to get from the airport to our hotel, just off Wenceslas Square, in the centre of town! I also bought a pair of real leather gloves for 390Kc (about ?7.50!) and food and admission prices were also dirt cheap!
Wencenslas Square
The first afternoon we just walked from our hotel, down Wenceslas Square and towards the Old Town and the Old Town Square. On the way we passed plenty of market stalls selling everything from tourist paraphernalia to leather, wooden, glass and woollen goods all at bargain prices! The Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock were beautiful! With The Church of Our Lady before Tyn, the Town Hall and various other churches surrounding the square, everywhere you looked was architectural beauty! We were lucky enough to just come out of a coffee house just before 4pm to watch the huge decorated clock face chime and see the mannequin figures spin around in a coo coo clock type fashion.
Barbie Museum
The next day we got up early and head straight for Prague Castle with our one day public transport cards (70Kc = £1.40). After gaining seemingly free entry to the grounds, we then had to pay the huge sum of 150Kc each (£3.00) to the state rooms and certain other parts of the castles buildings (Phew! We only just afforded it!). It was well worth it too! St Vitus Cathedral has beautiful stained galls windows and it was just nice to be inside and out of the freezing cold. Inside you?ll also find the Royal Crypt and numerous smaller chapels. From the Cathedral we head into the Royal Palace and probably the biggest hall I've ever been in! The Castle's grounds and gardens looked beautiful so for those of you visiting at warmer times of the year, it would be worth going just to see this! Then we walked down Golden Lane and saw where Kafka lived and checked out the armoury. But the funniest thing was the Toy and Barbie Museum! Every Barbie you can imagine was in this place pregnant Barbie (Eww!), Spice Girls Barbies, Princess Barbie, Michael Jackson Barbie, all her siblings, kids and lovers!, and eighties Barbies! (these were very cool!). The view from the Castle is all encompassing you can see the whole town beneath you and it a great photo of on a clear day!

During our stay, we also made a trip to Charles Bridge where you also get a nice view of the River Vltava and up to the Castle, to the Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square, to the New Town and a spot of shopping! On our way back to the airport we realised what a great time we had had. I would recommend going to Prague to anyone who is remotely interested as it is a beautiful city that you don?t have to spend a lot of money in to have a good time!

I have to admit I never would have thought of visiting Prague in the winter, but it sounds like you had a great time, and the winter scenery in your photos is beautiful.
