Since time was running short, we did take out, but this would be a great place to sit down and enjoy a home cooked meal.
Favorite Dish: We chose the Shrimp Po'Boy (dressed with mayo, tomatoes, lettuce pickles and onion) on seeded french bread.

Situated in the historic Pontalba Building on world-famous Jackson Square, River’s Edge Restaurant is a locally owned, family-run dining establishment. Light and airy with friendly service, you'll relax and enjoy their classic cajun and creole dishes.
Favorite Dish: I selected the Red Beans and Rice with Andouille (with french bread).

This not really an "American" type restaurant, but since VT doesn't have a category for cajun/creole, then this will have to do. This restaurant is in a perfect location for people watching, plus the food is excellent.
Favorite Dish: You start off with a warm loaf of French Bread and butter...so good...and a cold Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager. For dinner, I selected the Seafood Gumbo (spicy shrimp, crab & rice).

If you love steak...really good steak, then this is the place to go. Selected one of the best restaurants in New Orleans by Zagat's, you have to try it to believe it.
Favorite Dish: I had the 12 oz. Prime Rib au jus with Johnnie's original Crazy Potatoes (red potatoes, seasoned and mixed with hot sauce).

One thing that you should do when you visit New Orleans is try not to eat at any of the chain restaurants. Visit the local establishments and your taste buds will be treated to a most wonderful culinary delight. That's what Jack Dempsey's is all about, great food, happy customers and awesome prices.
Favorite Dish: I've had the Fried Catfish with Mac & Cheese (lightly fried, many pieces and homemade macaroni and cheese) and also the Grilled Shrimp Salad (with a honey mustard dressing).

Recognized as one of New Orleans' best seafood joints since 1961. In a town famous for great seafood, Deanies is in a class by itself. Their giant seafood platter is loaded with succulent fried oysters, shrimp, catfish, soft-shell crabs, and crawfish balls, and their boiled seafood is New Orleans' best. If you love great tasting seafood, do not wait any longer and go visit Deanie's!!!
Favorite Dish: Unlike other restaurants which start off with bread and butter, Deanie's brings a place of Red Potatoes boiled in crab oil. For dinner, I selected the Stuffed Flounder Platter (crabmeat dressing sandwiched between two fresh flounder filets and broiled to perfection) served with salad and baked potato (you can also choose fries or green beans). As for my drink, I chose Abita's Purple Haze Raspberry Wheat Lager (a crisp, American style wheat beer with raspberry puree added after filtration).

Located in the French Quarter, Landry's Seafood House is the perfect blend of exceptional seafood with a light, lively and casual atmosphere. The restaurant features an array of exquisite recipes that include fresh seafood selections from across the states.
Favorite Dish: I would try the Shrimp Platter (shrimp scampi, fried shrimp, broiled and fried stuffed shrimp, blackened shrimp, lemon pepper shrimp)...simply scrumptous!!!

It's been across from Jackson Square since the 1860's. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Cafe du Monde is an experience that no visitor should miss, and no local should forget to do often. CDM (this is the abbreviation found on the big yellow cans of Cafe' du Monde coffee) is immediately recognizable by its large green-and-white-striped awning over the outside patio. This is your first decision--whether to sit outside or inside. If you come to CDM on a weekend afternoon or evening, you may not have much choice in seating.
This isn't a fancy place, obvisouly, so if you see an open table, jump on it, in true New Orleans fashion. If you don't, someone will just take it and leave you standing there. Don't bother waiting for a wait person to come and clean the table off; they'll do that after you've sat down. If you stand on ceremony, you'll continue to stand. You also don't have to wait for someone to bring you a menu--you'll find it on the side of the napkin dispenser on the table.
Favorite Dish: You have to try the Beignets and cafe au lait.

Freshly made sandwiches with all the fix'ins you want. You can order your po'boy mild, medium or hot (which is what I did and should not have...lol). You can get fries with it and soda in a bottle.
Favorite Dish: Get the Roast beef Po-Boy (dressed) or Hot Sausage Po-Boy (dressed) with a bag of Zaps chips and a bottle of Barqs.

Down home cooking and very good service. Expect to unbuckle your belt when finished eating. Located on busy commercial stretch of Poydras Street in the bustling Central Business District (CBD), Mother's is another favorite with locals and tourists that has people lined up waiting for tables as early as 7 a.m. on weekends.
The restaurant has been around since the '40s and has long been known for its blue-collar crowds and for serving some of the best po-boys in New Orleans. The steamed vegetables, baked ham, roast turkey and roast beef are excellent at this cafeteria-style restaurant. The breakfast is hearty and comes with strong cups of chicory-laced coffee.
Favorite Dish: Everything on the menu. I had a Shrimp Po'Boy which was out of this world.
