  • If you bring your pets with you on vacation, there are a few beaches that you can go to where they are allowed to run without a leash. At Dog Beach (behind the Del Mar Racetrack/I-5 and Via de La Valle) you can let your dog run free in the surf from January to June (from the middle of June until the middle of September they must be on the leash) and again from October to December.
    The dogs had a blast!

Another beach which I have gone to is Dog Beach @ Pacific/Ocean Beach (I-8 west until it ends, then follow the signs) where your dog can run free all year long. The water is shallower than Del Mar and everyone has a great time.

  • The Cleveland National Forest is 147,000 acres (with three ranger districts) which offers a wide variety of terrain, wildlife and recreational activities. The forest extends from within five miles of the border with Mexico northward approximately 130 miles to Orange and Riverside counties.

The southernmost Descanso District is noted for the Laguna Mountains and is the most southerly portion of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Palomar (the central district) includes Palomar Mountain and the famed Palomar Observatory with its 200-inch Hale telescope. The district is home to one of the largest stands of rare big-cone Douglas fir in southern California.

The northern district is Trabuco where the Santa Ana Mountains thrust up as open space against an urban sea. The Pine Creek area is known for its wildlife, including deer, mountain lions, coyotes, gray foxes, hawks, owls and reptiles.
