"Waba-whata?" Wabamun Lake by kymbanm

Wabamun Lake Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 11 photos

I ended up wandering into this town when I needed a munchy/water break during my drive from Edmonton to Hinton along Hwy 16. Wabamun is a native word for 'looking glass' ...and since the lake freezes over in Winter, this name makes perfect sence!

This lake community was originally located across the lake from it's current location, but with the arrival of the Railroad, the villagers decided to simply move the town closer to the depot. With this in mind, villagers slid the buildings of their town across the river and placed them in their current locaiton.

Do I KNOW this for fact? No. Did I read it online somewhere? Yes. Do I have any clue where this was so that I could properly cite the person who provided this information? No, but at least I am trying a bit ;)

Little did you know, that later in the year there was a huge train derailment that dumped millions of liters of oil into the lake about 3 miles from this pretty lakeside town.
