My Trip To The Bowels of the Earth

by kymbanm - last update: Jun 17, 2005

Road Trip!!!

Big Room column
At the last minute, I was invited to participate in a family road trip - not MY family, one of my best friend's family :)

We drove from Albuquerque to El Paso on day one - stopping for a bit in White Sands on the way down. We jumped over the border for dinner in Juarez that night.

And from El Paso to Carlsbad Caverns, then home to Albuquerque on day two.

We had a few adventures, and a lot of fun during our travels - but for now, lets focus on the beauty of the caverns.
Big Room tour
I'm not going to build a ton of tips ... there are enough about most of the things you can do here. I just want to share a little of what I learned, experienced, and felt while wandering the paths of this amazing series of caverns.

As stated in the audio tour - These are not the largest caverns of the world, but they are unique. there are so many types of natural features condensed into this one accesible place. The ability for us non-spelunkers to go and explore is a treat not to be missed.

A wonderful day ....

This is the third time in my life that I've been to these caverns. The first time I was a child. The second time was about 15 years ago, and had just moved to New Mexico. This time was different.

I did the driving. I took the pictures. I felt the breath of Mother Earth move through my hair and across my face.

The caverns are cool, and they breathe .... air pumps in and out of the caverns on it's own. This air keeps this wonder of nature alive ...
The art of Mother Earth

Definitely the kind of tips that count. Nice stuff. Hard to photograph in caves - my cave trip resulted in mostly blanks.

Excellent tips - my family visited when I was in the 3rd grade and I remember being fascinated - and learning that what bat guano was! Thanks for the bathroom tip - always important! :)

Stalagcites & stalagtites are amazing formations. I enjoyed your coverage of the Carlsbad Caverns. I appreciated your comment about 27 stories underground, not for the faint of heart or the weak of bladder.

Being in the bowels of mother earth must be very humbling. We hope she doesn't get indigestion while you're down there.
