Debauchery and Culture in one wonderful place!

by kymbanm - last update: Oct 11, 2004

Central Amsterdam

Damrak Canal, Central Amsterdam
Our first hotel was near Damrak Canal ..... I discovered early on that the canals are the lifeblood of this city. Roads, cafe's and all of the directions we received were guided by this or that canal :)

Amsterdam is easy to navigate on foot, and everyone told us to rent bikes, but since neither of us had ridden in a while, we chose not to :) I spent the first day wandering without a map - just ambling about from interesting place to the next interesting place ... of course this meant that I did some backtracking!
Dam Square, Amsterdam

Dam Square

This was my first view of Dam Square. It was here that I finally consulted my map so I could figure out what I was seeing :) The architecture on the Palace was amazing .... I spent the day looking up at the amazing gables and critters embeded in the roof lines. So, I'm not and architect and have no idea what the real terms should be, but the beauty was worth the stiff neck.

Museumplein

After we left Amsterdam, we ended up back there when our connecting flight was messed up :) The airline graciously put us up in a hotel in the museum district.

It was 2200, and just getting dark. I had loved the Rijksmuseum during my first visit, but loved it more with the night lighting.

The nearby park was teaming with life ..... lawn bowling, basketball, skateboarding, dessert filled picnics, and other wonderful daily activities.

Glad to hear you had two nice visits to Amsterdam, on the way and on the way back. I spent a few days there last year (last May, in fact, though it doesn't feel like that long ago) and had a great time cycling all around.
