A Modern City of Ancient Marvels Trier is a beautiful and wonderful city that, as legend has it, was carved from the landscape by the Celts 1,300 years before Rome, who invaded it in 56 BC. The Roman superiority over the original inhabitants is quite evident in the sudden appearance of archetectural, sanitary, and technological advances previously unseen in the area.
However, despite the technological superiority of the Romans, they could never quite completely conquer Germania (or Danubia). No, Trier exists as a monument to both cultures. A monument to Rome for it's marvelous structures and archetectural impact and a monument to it's current German inhabitants...merely for still inhabiting it. Chalk it up to the strong tie to familial relations, the (sometimes disastrous) German hard-headedness, and the astounding strength of the German heart that the current Romans do not still claim Trier and its surroundings as their territory.
My first view of Trier was, of course, the modern day version. But my first enlightened view was through the eyes of the Porta Nigra. The entire city is peppered with archetectural and historical delight and if you are to visit Germany, I would look at you in askance should you not visit Trier. |
