| Making friends in Thailand |
Hello, I'm a novice traveler but trying hard to catch up. I grew up in Grozny Chechnya and have lived in St. Petersburg Russia since 1994. I was fortunate to travel some in High School and spent a year in California as an exchange student and also visited Paris on a student trip. Recently, I've been to Egypt, Turkey, Thailand, Estonia & Latvia. It's difficult for Russian citizens to get visas to travel to many countries, so I'm a little limited where I can go. The most important thing for me when I travel is sun. I love the beach and don't consider it a vacation unless I can spend some time working on my tan. Oksana |
Thailand My most recent vacation was to Thailand. I spent a few days in Bangkok, and then a lot of time in Pattaya. Pattaya was pretty shocking. The sex tourist industry was - well - very present. The beach wasn't so great, but the hotel I stayed at was great. We also made it to Koi Samet for a few days and that was beautiful. I went in November, to thaw out from St. Petersburg. The beach was definately the highlight. |

Turkey I've been to Turkey twice, once with friends and once with my Mom. I adore the natural beauty of the beach areas, though the constant "Do you want to go to disco?" from Turkish men gets quite old after the thousandth time a day. |

Egypt The sea is unbelievably clear and beautfiul. The resorts are very inexpensive and all inclusive. Unfortunately, the trip to the pyramids wasn't so great - 6 hours each way on a hot bus with a tour guide that spoke Russian, but very poorly. |
Rome I was there in August and sadly, there were no Italians left in town. The siteseeing is amazing, but I like to meet people, so it was kind of a disappointing trip. :-( |
Riga Riga was just a weekend trip - a short overnight train from St. Petersburg. It was more of a party weekend with a just a touch of sightseeing. I would love to see Riga in the summer. The Historical Center is beautiful and I've heard Jurmala (beach town) is a lot of fun. |

Paris I'm in awe of Paris. It's beautiful architecture seems unending. Dinner cruises in Paris are one of the most romantic things I've ever encountered. If only the the Customer Service Desk at Air France didn't have the most rude and unhelpful people I've ever encountered... A story for another time. |
Brazil How can somebody who loves the beach not love Rio. It's such a beautiful and friendly local, it's on my wish list for a return trip. It's also a confusing city. Even coming from Russia, it's hard to drive by the dilapitated flovellas (shanty towns) without some deep thought. I had a chance to see two local football teams playing for the area championship at the famed Macarena Stadium... what an experience. Great weather, budget friendly, wonderful people... but such a long plane ride. My butt gets sore jus thinking about it. |
