My month in fairbanks

by txshutterbug - last update: Jan 13, 2004

The cold

I'm orig from South Louisiana and living in Central Texas now. The coldest I've experienced before now is about 12 degrees and that is only once. It is unbelievably cold here in Fairbanks during the winter. Could possibly be considered an extreme sport just breathing in -20 degrees. Sheesh!

The culture

This is an interesting snapshot of humanity. Here in the middle of nowhere is a fairly good sized town. You have a military base, a university, industry and a smattering of many different cultures. Obviously are the native Alaskans, Inuits, etc. The worst thing that has happened to them is the white man and his alcoholic beverages. Because of the military and retirees who stay here, there are bits of Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Latino, etc. cultures here.
If your'e looking for a wife, don't come here. There are 6-10 men for every one woman.

The food

Okay, I'm still sampling the food here.
Gerardos is a great place for pizza and other Italian goods.
The Hot Tamale downtown is great Mexican food. Try the chipotle peppers (smoked jalapenos) Buffet at lunch and dinner.
International China 1 Buffet - Pretty good if Chinese buffets are your thing.
Captain Bartlett's Inn - Some friends ate lunch in the "saloon" and said the sandwiches were good. My bud and I had dinner and it sucked. I had the salmon and it was overcooked - served with tasteless collard greens that gave me indigestion. The only good part was the potatoes and the Dr. Pepper.
I'm still eating Fairbanks. Stay tuned. I'm told the Turtle Club in Fox, Alaska is a great place for steaks.

Pros:"Like a winter wonderland. Widely varying cultures in a small area. Few pawn shops and "dancer" bars, unlike most military towns"
Cons:"Oh man it is cold. You can bundle up but you can't hide! Lot's of drunk natives. Ratio of genders is 6-10 men for every woman."
In A Nutshell:"I'd like to see this place in the summer. Not likely my job will send me here in the summer, though"
