Anguilla is the northern most island of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. They are called "leeward" because the prevailing winds in the area blow from south to north. Thus, the Leeward Islands are downwind, on the backside, or leeward from the Windward Islands, the group of islands that first meet the Trade Winds coming from the south.
The Lesser Antilles are part of the Antilles, which together with the Bahamas form the West Indies.
I had the pleasure of staying here for a week in July 2006.
The thing that struck me about Anguilla was how un-crowded everything was. Perhaps it was because we were visiting during the "low" season. I can't see myself really enjoying crowded beaches.
While we were there, the beaches felt like they belonged to me, and my friends. Despite the lack of large groups of people, we always had something to do. There was always a cabana person that could set up a beach unbrella, grab towels, and run you a rum punch. It felt deserted but we enjoyed all of the benefits of staying at a resort hotel.
Before we knew it, the day was over and we were cheering at the sunset.
I will be back one day, but not before I visit Nevis and St.Kitts. I hear good things about those places, but I have to see them for myself.
I have to keep traveling, otherwise I won't have anywhere to compare this place to.
- Pros:Quiet, un-crowded, and not yet popular.
- Cons:Expensive food due to importing.
- In a nutshell:If you don't like a lot of people in your vacation, go here.

Hey. Good tips about Anguilla. I'm heading there in May for my wedding. I definitely need to try the rum punch.
