Site of one of the five primary Shiva lingam temples in South India -here he is manifest as the element fire, and the massive Arunachaleswar temple squats at the base of the the holy hill Arunachala. For at least two millenia the mountain - a manifestation of shiva - has been drawing saints towards itself and there is a string of small temples, ashrams and holy caves around its base and on its flanks. One of these is the quiet Sri Ramanashramam.

Try walking around the hill -clockwise - for good karma and a nice exercise! Be careful of naughty monkeys, and take lots of water as it is a decievingly lengthy trip. One is meant to undertake the walk in bare feet. A donkey with a sparkle in his eye tried to boot me as I started out - be careful of him.

Hotels are plentiful, but booked during the massive Kartikai Deepam shiva festival - held in November - which culminates in an enormous ghee fire which is lit on the summit of the mountain. A great article which makes mention of this is at -

There is a really cute once-a-day small guage train from Pondicherry, the lovely french outpost by the ocean. One has to be made of stronger stuff to take the bus to Bangalore.
