...is that it is STILL active. It is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Luckily for the town of La Fortuna, not 5 miles from it, the cone is broken off on one side so the smoke and rocks have never hurt the town. Small eruptions are common, about daily (just a few rocks tumbling down). Unfortunately, I wasnt able to catch them with my camera soon enough... but here are some (cloudy) pictures anyway
I'm not too sure why this sign was laying on the ground on the lookout point, but here it is. Where I was standing is very close to the volcano. The tour guide was proud to tell us that climbing the volcano was very illegal, but here are the pictures of him standing at the top... haha. People have died there as recently as September 2003 and August 2000. In 2000, two tourists and their guide were killed by the pyroclastic flows.
Well, we expected to not see the top of Arenal, considering we went in July, almost the middle of the green season. It's much clearer in the morning, though.

There are 2 Arenals in Costa Rica. This one is about a mile from Cartegena, not the one that's close the the lake and the volcano
not a camping site I suppose, with the neighbourhood of a volcano
