As a resident of NWLM for most of my life, I have seen many changes. Like everywhere, a large amount of urban growth has taken place here.
Traverse City is the cultural and shopping center of NWLM so I guess you could say that Traverse City has seen the most growth. However just about every town in NWLM has seen it's own population boom. How does an area like this grow rapidly and yet preserve a favorable "Quality of Life".

As a traveler you could probably say that the most favorable qualities of NWLM would be the natural ones. Lakes, rivers, beaches, and forests are still the big attraction. The splender of fall color on the trees is a wonder.

Culturally, I would have to say there are better places to visit. Museums are not in great size or abundance here. Interlochen Arts Academy is probably NWLM 's greatest cultural asset. On many summer evenings, concerts of favorable variety can be seen at IAA. The National Cherry Festival usually takes place in early July as well. The Bliss Music Festival is fun if you are into World and other alternative music styles.
Many festivals take place during the NWLM year. Tip-up town USA on Hougton Lake is still one of the great winter festivals. Winter in itself is a fine time in NWLM. Skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and snowshoeing are all popular fun during the winter Months. NWLM is a wonderful place for the lighthouse enthusiast. Hikers, hunters, golfers, fishermen, campers, and boaters could all find a playground here. Nowhere else in the world are there larger freshwater lakes than the Great Lakes. From Grand Traverse Bay or Lake Michigan one could spend a lifetime exploring the Great Lakes Waterways.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Natural Assets like Water, woods and beaches.
  • Cons:Rude drivers on roadways. Uncontrolled growth.
  • In a nutshell:All in All. It's O.K. here.
