It was an interesting time -- those years of visiting Israel. Everyone, it seems, has a gun. (sound's like Texas, I know). In Israel at the time, if you were in the armed forces you were required to carry your weapon with you at all times -- whether you were on or off duty. Made me feel more secure, actually. However, again I was there to work rather than play and for the most part I found myself in Jerusalem, the south near Eilat, or up by the Sea of Galilee.

Eliat and the Negev Desert are really really interesting. The Red Sea in Eliat provides some of the most amazing snokeling available. The Great Rift Valley that extends from Israel all the way through the Serengeti is spectacular. And it is hot. In the summer, anyway.

Is goes without saying that there is a ton of history in Israel. The knowledge the Romans had all those years ago on how to build large, complex cities with infrastructure is amazing. This aquaduct runs down the coast just north of Tel Aviv.
