  • visit Madaba, Mt. Nebo, the Dead Sea, and Karak
If you are driving from Amman to Petra, it is easy to spend an extra day (or maybe a little more) to visit these places. Madaba is known as the 'Mosaic City' and is known for its various Mosaics, including one of the earliest maps of ancient Palestine. Mt. Nebo is the mountain that moses climbed to die, and now there is a shrine to the Biblical figure (I'm not a very religious person, but there is something neat about being in a place like this). The Dead Sea is amazing. Not only is it the lowest spot on earth (something like 371 meters below sea level), but it is also one of the strangest feelings to be floating completely on the top of the water (if you can see in the photo below, my friend Rob has both hands and both feet out of the water...try doing that in a regular lake). Finally, Karak is a city that has the best of the Crusader forts that is located in Jordan...well worth a stop.

  • Petra is one of the most unbelievable sights I have ever seen. It is an entire city carved out of red rock of the surrounding hills and cliffs (hence the name, 'the Rose City'). You could literaly spend a couple of weeks here, hiking and rock climbing around Petra...it is an awesome place to see.

Things To Do: see the Treasury at Petra

  • To get into the park at Petra, you have to walk through the mile long Seik (a narrow canyon that can get about 10 feet wide and 200 feet high). When you get to the end of the Seik, directly in front of you is the Treasury, one of the most amazing structures you'll ever see.

Things To Do: see the Monastery at Petra

  • The Monastery is similar to the Treasury, but it is actually larger. Getting to the Monastery is half the fun...you have to hike up hundreds of steps that were carved into the rock by the ancient Nabateans. When you finally get to the top of the climb, you won't be disappointed! (the top spire of the Monastery appeared on the cover of a National Geographic featuring Petra). To really fit in, put on a Jordanian headress and strike a serious pose!

Things To Do: visit the Wadi Rum

  • The Wadi Rum is where much of the classic movie 'Lawrence of Arabia' was filmed. It was some of the most breathtaking desert scenery in the world (huge cliffs rising hundreds of feet up from the flat desert floor). If you'll lucky you'll see Jordan's version of the Mounted Police (policemen on camelback). It is a very beautiful spot that shouldn't be missed if travelling to Jordan.
