Founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1745, Swellendam is the third oldest European town in South Africa. Its about 1/2 way between Cape Town and George, in the Overberg section of the Western Cape While not a major tourist attraction, its a very charming place. It's location at the base of the Langeberg Mountains, surrounded by rolling hills, with the Koornlands river winding through town, make it a surprisingly attractive country town. There's a fair amount of outdoor activities to be done in the area and for those who like a quiet place to stay, it may be worth spending a few days. But even if you're passing through (either driving to or from the Garden Route or driving over the mountains to the Little Karoo), its a great place to stay for the night, because there's a decent amount of inns and B&Bs and a fantastic restaurant (Koornlands Restaurant). So, if you're weary from driving and want to refresh with an incredible meal and a good night sleep in a quiet town, Swellendam's a good option.
