Saba is the most unusual island in the Caribbean that I've ever visited. It's like a lush Gibralter. Top 10 in the world for diving; it's also wonderful for hiking, reading and general loafing.
There is basically NO beach (execpt for a tiny, tiny strip of black sand). Most of the better hotels have pools. I recommend the Cottage Colony for it's location in the "bustling" town of Windwardside. Each room is a self-contained cottage.
Restaurants are modest. This is NOT St. Barts when it comes to haute cusine! Most places will even pick you up at your hotel and re-deliver you.
Saba is safe enough to hitchhike on the one and only road. It's a nice hike to go from Windwardside downhill to the other town, "The Bottom". (I wouldn't stay there, however). It's also worth testing your calf muscles by descending and ascending the "Ladder", a long staircase that used to be the way old Sabans delivered cargo to the island.
The hike up to the island's highest point-- Mount Scenery-- is also a must.
Native Sabans are friendly and always expect a "Howzit" when passing them by. Along with blacks, there are a large number of red-faced, white inhabitants who are descended from the hearty pioneers that came from the Shetland Islands centuries before. |

Lawlessgal Tue Jan 3, 2006 03:58 UTC So glad to see someone else who loves the island. In addition to the Mt Scenery hike I recommend the Sandy Cruz trail, start over in Hell's Gate and finish up with lunch at Queen's Gardens in Troy Hill. Plus a swim in the pool! :) | catalysta Fri Sep 30, 2005 18:00 UTC Wish ONE of you would build more of a page about this intriguing island!
