New Caledonia is not as well-known as some of its neighbours like Fiji and Samoa which makes it a perfect tropical destination if you want to get away from hordes of tourists. It's only about two to four hours away from Australia's east coast by plane, though you might want to take a domestic flight to get to the really great spots like Lifou or Ile des Pins.

It is truly a beatiful place with GREAT beaches - if you go in the winter remember that it can get pretty cold! The capital Noumea is not a very exciting place and does not have the best beaches but it does have some charm and good restaurants!
