Cardiff - A Bustling City Of Culture

Cardiff's 100th Anniversary

History

I was surprised to find out that Cardiff, as a city, is a mere 100 years old. It was proclaimed a city in 1905 and became capital of Wales in 1955. The area developed around a Roman fort that was later turned into a medieval castle. Now, Cardiff is a Welsh cultural mecca. From the FA Cup at the Millenium Stadium to the Singer of the World competition, 'Europe's Youngest City' has something for everyone. Bustling city streets, well-laid out shops and arcades, and a plethora of restaurants and shopping, make this a great city to spend a week in. There are so many attractions and interesting sites in the area that I highly recommend using it as a base to explore the rest of south Wales.
Cardiff Castle's Main Gate

Culture, History, and Fun

The huge Millenium Stadium, concert venues, giant state-of-the-art cinemas, an award-winning park, boat tours on the Severn, a great museum, and a fantastic castle dominate Cardiff's attractions. There is also great shopping here, particularly at the Cardiff Market, where you can find all kinds of scrumptious fresh foods at very affordable prices. People of all races and persuasions are found here, but the city is not overcrowded - a mere 327,500 people call it home - so if you don't particularly care for big cities (I don't), don't worry! This one is different - I loved it.

Pros:"Clean, central to other attractions, great shopping and eating, entertainment, history."
Cons:"A little unsafe after dark - like most cities, moderately expensive bus fares."
In A Nutshell:"A great city to visit and use as your base in southern Wales."
