Italian, anyone?

Visit Schenectady's Little Italy, Jay Street off of Union St. in downtown Schenectady. There you'll find Perecca's, the best bakery anywhere. Buy a loaf of bread and browse the italian pastas, cheese, and deli meats. Across the street is Cicitello's home oft he best tomato Pie (pizza) ever, at prices so cheap you won't even have to pull out your wallet. A root beer in a bottle and a couple of slices of pizza (ask for the corner) will set you back less than $5. For dessert, italian delicacies will tempt you. In summer,. ask for the italian ice. The old Italian neighborhood is Goose Hill, Van Vranken off of Nott Street. You'll find a butcher, pizza places, italian restaurants and people watching on a drive through this former immigrant neighborhood. For mass with an Italian accent, check out the early sunday morning service at St. Anthony's, a Catholic church with hundreds of active and loyal parish families.

Food and All That Jazz

Pizza King - the best pizza in the United States! Choose from entree toppings on a crunchy chewy crust and check out the signed posters on the wall from adoring broadway players (Proctor's is just across the street).
A restaurant with my wine 'on tap' - Castelo's on Nott Terrace also serves a great eggplant parmigana and Mondavi Wine.

Jazz - check out the Van Dyck on lower Union Street in the Stockade and the New Parker Inn on State St. nest to Proctors for Jazz nights - free or just a few $ for cover to hear local jazz in a sumptous environment. Classy!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Treasure trove for history, invention and architecture buffs, the home of innovations!
  • Cons:Like all big cities - Violence in some neighborhoods, safe near downtown areas.
  • In a nutshell:Museums, Italian Food, Historic Architecture, convenient to Saratoga and Albany.
