Montevideo is the Capital City of Uruguay with a population of around 1,350,000
It is a small city, but it is a city that has everything to offer. From the heart of the city you can reach beaches, woodland and many famous tourist sites within 15 minutes by car. The County or Department as it is known is broken up into smaller suburbs each offering its own theme with its own history attached to it.
The architecture in the city and the suburbs is unique in everyway houses, buildings all taking on their own design and there are monuments and statues on practically every street you walk down.
We live in Carrasco its about 15km outside the city and generally in a “green area” the streets are tree lined with amazing houses, in our opinion its heaven. We have the luxury of going to the beach (10 minutes) or to the wooded parks with its lake (5 minutes) .
Carrasco beach is huge with miles of golden sand and it never gets crowded as most bathers and sun worshipers go to Pocitos about 12km along the rambler.I often walk along the rambler as the views seem to change daily, you pass so much beautiful scenery its like reading a book a new chapter opens on a daily basis .The early morning sunrise or the evening sunset is a truly spectacular sight.
The parts in between tells its own story, its a never ending love affair!!!
As I said earlier Montevideo has everything to offer you can sit on the beach all day or visit the many parks, you can go to the numerous museums or art galleries, you can explore the shops and on many days there are huge markets selling everything, there are endless walks the rambler being one, an afternoon in the port is a must and take in the restaurants, the old city on a Saturday and the miles of street markets on a Sunday.
A friend of mine once said
“ If you cannot find it in Montevideo then it doesn’t exist”
After living here I couldn’t agree with him more.
- Pros:Easy to get around
- Cons:The food is too good......a place you can put weight on!!!
