RER (Regional Trains): Don't throw out your RER tickets

Getting TO/AROUND: Don't discard your RER ticket when you get on the train, because you will need it to get OUT of the turnstile. Also remember- if your ticket is good for the metro (RATP) and RER (dans Paris), then it's only good for the city zones. The airports and Versailles are outside of these zones.

RER (Regional Trains): Keep your eyes open when going to CDG

Getting TO/AROUND: There are 2 RER B lines from the city to CDG (DeGaulle Airport); make sure you get on the right line that goes out to CDG. Sometimes it can be confusing: the boards list all the routes and designate whether they're 'long' or 'short' trains. Then when the RER's come in, they are identified by their names, not necessarily the destination.

One goes to Mitry, the other to CDG. They split after the Aulnay-sous-Bois stop. It may not always be clear which one you're on...but here's a fail-safe clue:

after the Aulnay-sous-Bois stop, if the train goes into a tunnel, you're on the right track; if you can still look out and still see the sights, get off at the next stop (Sevran-Livry), turn around, and get off at Aulnay for the right one.

Trains: SNCF, TGV, etc.: Thalys and reservations

Getting TO/AROUND: The Thalys trains are a great connection for a day trip to Brussels, or a longer journey to Germany/Luxembourg. One tip: RESERVE! The earlier you reserve, the better your chances to get a seat...and a cheaper one at that.

The Thalys is not a cheap way to get from point A to point B, but it's fast. Unless you have a million bags, second class is fine enough. (No different than Amtrak.)

If you can reserve way in advance, get the Smilys or Mezzo Plus rates. A regular, last minute second-class (comfort) rate for a round-trip Paris-Brussels could reach 130 Euros apiece. For a day trip, it can be steep.
