"The stone which the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone."

(Psalms 118:22)

In 1878, Gai Oni, the first modern Jewish settlement in the Galilee, was founded. After enduring three years of drought, the settlers abandoned it. A few years later, in 1882, a group of Romanian Jews succeeded in building a lasting Jewish settlement north of Safed. They named it Rosh Pinna, the Hebrew word for "cornerstone."

I just found out that one of my great-grandfathers was in charge of plantations in Rosh Pinna in the 1890s, and another one (Jacob Hazan) had a scandalous affair with a teacher there, leading to his departure for Cairo!
