| A JUDAS TREE BLOOMS IN TEL AVIV |
It’s taken many years for me to get over my prejudice against Tel Aviv. In my pre-VT days, I saw Tel Aviv as an ugly hodgepodge of office towers and peeling stucco. As a resident of Jerusalem, where it’s always cool in the evening, no matter how hot the sun blazes during the day, I would visit Tel Aviv and rush home, never understanding how people could live in such a hot, sticky place. I still don’t understand this entirely, but VT has given me a newfound appreciation of all places – and that includes Tel Aviv.

| | Where is the Airport? For airport tips, have a look at my LOD page. The airport is not in Tel Aviv, despite the fact that the airlines use TLV as the destination. Terminal 3 is in the nearby city of Lod.
Ben-Gurion Airport is often referred to by the Hebrew acronym "Natbag" (Namal Te'ufa Ben-Gurion). Over the years, this term has become a standing joke in the English-speaking community because some idiotic signmaker used it on the English road signs directing traffic to the airport. |
It's a White City (under the soot) Here is a typical example of the Bauhaus architecture for which Tel Aviv is now famous. Many of the old buildings have been saved from the wrecker's ball and are being spruced up thanks to the inclusion of Tel Aviv on the UN list of World Heritage sites.
For more information, see "A Bow to Bauhaus" on my Israel page. | | |

apiongtourist Thu Oct 25, 2007 11:18 UTC Anyway, we expect to visit Israel during the Christmas holidays as Catholic pilgrims. We will see if we can see the sights other than the Catholic favorites. This, hopefully, is where you pictures will help. | July2 Sun Aug 19, 2007 15:13 UTC Jaffa is intriguing. My first tour introduced me to it; I had to get back and explore alone. Walking to/from TA-Jaffa via the beach was liberating for a city girl. Beautiful views. Got to get back, visit by night - the lights, the moon on the sea... | lionreb Sun Apr 1, 2007 18:21 UTC Even the choice of a restaurant can be a meaningful experience. sometimes it is even a political statement. Very sensitive tip. | evaanna Sat Jan 27, 2007 19:50 UTC I think the city should do everything to keep such small businesses going as they add colour to the monotony of modern cities. Tel Aviv is not so bad though, in spite of its skyscrapers. It has the sea too. BTW, the name Bialik sounds so Polish. |
