Best mojitoes at El Veradero
This is an unlikely looking shack on the little strip of river between the lagoon and the bay of mujeres called El Veradero. (Not to be confused with El Veradero de Oscar which is right on the main road heading south.) The place is super casual but the ambience comes from being right on the water and watching the boats go by as well as its laid back feel. We went for lunch at noon and were told they wouldn't be ready until 1 so went for a walk and returned later. They may be open for dinner too.
Favorite Dish: El Veradero is famous for its mojitoes (for good reason) and also serves gorgeous frresh fish and other seafood, served simply and deliciously with garlic or lemon etc. After we arrived a big group arrived and every single one of the them ordered mojitoes.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Take the Bay road south and take a right by the corner store with the big Corona bottle. Keep going as far as you can towards the river until you see the sign.
Price: US$11-20

coconut shrimp at Brisas Del Caribe
Went to this restaurant a couple of times. Nice menu, well-prepared food. It is open-air style with some tables on the beach by the ferry so you can sit on the sand if you want.
Favorite Dish: Cocount shrimp served with mango puree were excellent.
Address: Av. Rueda Medina

Directions: Near ferry dock on main harbour road

Whole pollo
This little place is only open during the day. It specializes in spit-roasted chicken with all the (Mexican) fixings - tortillas, rice, beans, hot peppers, and picked onion relish. You can eat there but take-out is also popular. Delicious and inexpensive.
Address: N end of Avenue Hidalgo, Isla Mujeres
Comparison: least expensive
Price: less than US$10

Sancochos Grill
This little street side restaurant is casual Mexican, good food at very good prices, which makes it quite busy sometimes, but service is usually decent. Drink prices are also excellent with 2 for 1 local beer, cocktails and tequila shots!
Favorite Dish: We've had a few good dishes here but really like the shrimp tacos and seafood enchiladas. I've heard that the mixed seafood on rice is also excellent but haven't tried it yet. It had some non-Mexican items on the menu too, such as chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes.
Address: North end of Hidalgo street, Isla Mujeres
Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: US$11-20
