Restaurant Name: Garden Court Buffet
This buffet in downtown Vegas has a great reputation and for good reason. We went out of our way (i.e., off the strip) to go to dinner here and didn't regret it. The buffet has a very pleasant atmosphere (Victorian courtyard theme), good service and tasty food. Even on a Tuesday there was quite a long line-up for dinner, but it moved quickly. Dinner service starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday night is steak night. Cost: $12.95. A huge t-bone, cooked to order, is included in the buffet offerings. I dare say some of the big fancy buffets like Rio and Aladdin's have more seafood and more ethnic cuisine, but coming from Vancouver, neither seafood nor asian food would be very special for us. We were looking for good hearty American food and we found it at the Garden Court Buffet.
Favorite Dish: The t-bone was very good but the ribs were to die for. So tender and delicious. It was a meat-lover's dream. Plenty of great veggie dishes and salads too though. What was good: mashed potatoes, collard greems, candied yams, chilis rellenos, eggplant jardiniere, a corn concoction (can't remember name). Good dessert buffet, including some great looking pies, including sugarles offerings. Iced cold lemonade. Not so good: asian food, fried seafood. Also offered: pizza, italian dishes, salads, mexican.

Restaurant Name: America
We went to America, the restuarant in New York, New York, for breakfast on our first morning in Vegas. There was a buffet breakfast available at our hotel but, personally, I think buffets for breakfast are over-rated and, as Canadians we were keen to try some regional American cuisine. We weren't disappointed at America. The line up was quite long but it moved quickly. We were seated right underneath the main attraction at the restaurant - a 30 by 90 foot raised map of the United States, including mountains, rivers and famous landmarks. The service was friendly, although a little slow (but so were we).
Favorite Dish: The food was very good and plentiful. Mark had the Ol' Dixie breakfast, which cost less than $10 and consisted of 2 eggs, country-fried steak, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and toast. I had the sirloin tips, mushrooms and onions, which also came with 2 eggs and hashbrowns and cost about $9, also very tasty.

Restaurant Name: Ellis Island Restaurant and Brewery
The days of inexpensive buffets and meals in Vegas are long gone but we heard this was once of the best deals in Vegas, not far off the Strip, so we went to check it out for brunch. The food was good, and the service was quick and friendly. No casino sign up was necessary, which was nice. The ambience was not great and could be characterized as "dingy casino" since the restaurant is right there on the edge of the casino.
Favorite Dish: My husband had steak for $4.95 and I had french toast with bacon for $3.50. The food was definitely good.
