"Catching up with Friends" Suizhou by funky_pigeon

We had been arranging to meet with friends in a town thats just outside of Shanghai - actually 1000Km away - so we ended up leaving Shanghai on the Thursday, just catching the bus down to the train station and then caught another sleeper train to Wuhan. This train was a little older than the previous train, but was still fairly nice, and we were lucky that we had a good compartment of people, who kept feeding us grapes and oranges.

We left Shanghai at 14:06 and arrived in Wuhan around 09:00 and then walked to the ferry terminal to cross the great Yangzi river. Wuhan is a port town and actually spreads on either side of the river. The main part of the town is on the western side of the river and has a large pedestrian area where there are many shops and restaurants.

Once in Wuhan we had been given a contact name to call, and he met us and booked us on a bus to get to the next town where our friends were to meet us. The bus journey wasn't that pleasant as many of the chinese men stunk of rice wine and with no air flow you could slowly feel yourself getting intoxicated. Halfway through the journey the stewardess came around and shut all the curtains for no apparent reason, except maybe going through the toll booths and trying to declare 2 people instead of 22 people!

Anyway - we were met in the evening by our friends Barry and Dale, we had met these guys previously in Bangkok on our way home in Feburary and it was great to catch up with them again, we spent the weekend with a large group of English teachers who teach at the various schools in the province and it was quite a sight for the chinese to see these 12 westerners walking around in Suizhou.

Actually everyone was very friendly - the chinese - and we had some really great chinese food from various places, noodle shops to backstreet restaurants and its not that easy sometimes to accomodate so many people at once, but they were very pleased to feed you. As for the sights in Suizhou, there are some areas for shopping, and its quite pleasant around the river, but hasn't really got any major temples or architecture - good chinese modern town though.
