"The Other Portland" Portland by olyrunner
Portland Travel Guide: 324 reviews and 548 photos
I live about 90 miles north of Portland, Oregon. So it was kind of cool to see "the other Portland". I spent 3 nights in this city, which was stop number two on my New England minor league baseball road trip.
The Portland Sea Dogs are a Class AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and they play at Hadlock Field. One interesting note about this stadium is that they built their own version of "the green monster". It is the same height as its model at Fenway Park, just not as long as the original. If you go to the game, bring some extra cash for souvenirs and of course a Sea Dog Biscuit (ice cream cookie sandwich).

In between my morning runs and the evening baseball games I did a bit of exploring - by land and by sea. Casco Bay Lines has ferry trips of varying distances - short cruises to all-day trips. While I was on the boat as a tourist, the locals use the ferry lines to get to their homes on the many islands just off the Portland coast. They also use the ferries to get mail and other goods to the islands.
If you go, don't forget to bring a jacket. It was almost 100 degrees in the city on the day I took the ferry, and I was a bit cold with the wind blowing on the water.
Casco Bay Lines
- Pros:Incredible trail system, funny accents
- Cons:No parking, scary drivers
- In a nutshell:Baseball, boats, trails & more

We stayed 8/29/05 to 8/31/05 and really enjoyed the hotel. Had breakfast all 3 days at the hotel restaurant . The food was delicious. Our waiter Oscar was really friendly and helpful. Great location, could walk most places, not far from the old port.
Hehe...that sounds like the castle hostel I stayed at in Bacharach, Germany...big climb to the top!!
