I took an IC train from Magdeburg and arrived in just over an hour in the Saxon city of Leipzig on a beautifully sunny day (the only one in a long time - most of East Germany has severe flood warnings at the time of writing!)

Leipzig has around 500,000 inhabitants and is roughly the same size as the state capital of Dresden. It has played a huge role in Germany and Europe as a commercial city (even unaffected by 40 years of GDR regime) and has the oldest German trade fair centre.

A few brief facts about the city:

Mass demonstrations in Oct 1989 against the East German communist regime in Leipzig started the process which led to its fall.

Leipzig's importance as a trade fair center goes back centuries.

Famous people who've lived and worked in Leipzig: Bach, Goethe, Mendelssohn, Schumann and others.

Leipzig and its surroundings form one of the fastest-growing economic regions in Europe.

Definitely well worth a visit - but stay a couple of days - one isn't enough for a city with this much history, culture and fabulous shopping centres. Oh talking of shopping, there are some real bargains to be had, especially clothing.

I've been planning to visit Leipzig and Dresden for some time. Your page convinced me I have to do it soon. The train station looks really impressive - I'm sure I would spend hours trainspotting ;)

Thanks for refreshing my memories from Leipzig, Maria. I remember well the art gallery but missed the Bach's church :-(. I also remember great local beer of very loooooong = real German :-) name!

Second visit to Leipzig yesterday and I still haven't written a page for it yet. This time was to see Angola vs Iran in the World Cup. Great day, lovely city. Your pictures do it justice :).
