| | Not all Post-War Communist Housing Developments! Celebrating its 1200 year anniversary, Magdeburg, the capital and a highlight of Sachsen Anhalt on the river Elbe is a lively, modern and vibrant East German city with a fascinating history from Otto the Great to Otto von Guericke. Approaching the centre, on the outskirts you will see plenty of post-war Stalinist style architecture but things are changing and the most recent exciting development is the newly built Hundertwasserhaus, Die Gruene Zitadelle in Dom Platz. Some of the information regarding the churches of Magdeburg was provided by my VT friend Nemorino Thanks Don! History of MagdeburgMagdeburg Tourist Information |

globetrott Mon Aug 20, 2007 20:00 UTC its another place, I like to visit, not for the old architecture, BUT rather for Hundertwasser ;-) and for the ship-bridge ! | lotharlerch Wed Jul 11, 2007 16:36 UTC A surprisingly nice place! Nice your tip about manholes. You remember the ones in Rome written S.P.Q.R. on them which means "Sono Pazzi Questi Romani" (they are foolish, these Romans) | Anchovy56 Mon May 14, 2007 17:55 UTC Thats the battleship my father served on. The USS Damato. | iwys Fri May 4, 2007 22:59 UTC Excellent page. Your photos and tips really showcase how much German unification has improved Magdeburg. I worked at the University here just after the wall had fallen. It was really depressing and characterless in those days. |
