Getting TO/AROUND: Amsterdam has a fabulous tram system... they are fast and regular and easy to use. Trips in 1 Zone are 1.60E. You can buy the tickets as a strippenkaart (10 I think) from the VVV office at the Leidseplein or Centraal Station or buy them individually on the tram.

Getting TO/AROUND: Amsterdam's Centraal Station - busy, bustling and hectic during the day... and much the same at night! You can get trains here to other cities within the Netherlands and the ICE train to other European countries. The staff here are (in my experience) very helpful and patient with non-Dutch travellers! The queues at the ticket offices are long and the ticket machines don't accept paper money so be prepared!

The website has more info in English.

Horse Drawn Carriage: Amsterdam - The old and the new

Getting TO/AROUND: On all my trips here I haven't seen too many horses around the centre of Amsterdam. In fact I think this was first. There are plenty of places to get the tram but I don't know where you would pick up a horse and buggy! Nice way to get around on a sunny spring day though!

Getting TO/AROUND: Well this isn't so much about getting around the Netherlands or even getting around Amsterdam. It's more about getting across the road from the hire bike place and getting to the park without getting hit by a tram or me not running down another dizzy tourist.

So Petra says "We really should hire a bike while we are here in Amsterdam. Everyone does - it can't be that difficult".

Me "Why would we want to do that? - the cars drive on the wrong side, we are unfit - there are trams coming at you from all directions - We WILL die!"

P - "Oh come on Maria! - It'll be fun - we will stay off the roads and just go to the park - have a cycle round and eat icecream afterwards to reward ourselves for being so brave and fit"

Me - "Tut. Ok then.......But I know I'm gonna hate it".

So off we went to the Mac Bike Hire place in Leidseplein and hired bikes. It was luuuuverly (and we didn't get killed by speeding trams).

We went to the Vondel Park - saw flocks of parakeets - ate icecream - drank coffee, watched skaters, joggers, walkers, and other "proper" cyclists keeping fit in one of Amsterdam's few green spaces.

Getting TO/AROUND: Saw this trio - bloke, trike and dog - waiting at the lights - so I asked him if I could take a pic - he smiled and gave me the thumbs up - the bloke didn't say much though :)) (It's amazing how they ALL speak english isn't it? )

I thought this looked like a really great way to get around the city - and the dog thought so too I reckon. Then the lights turned green and away they sped.

Getting TO/AROUND: Update!! - I DID arrive at the station on my last visit to Amsterdam in Sept 04!! We traveled through Belgium and France and arrived at Centraal Stn late at night. It was seedy and full of lurking weirdos. Called a cab pdq to take us to the hotel. The cab driver didn't know the way... it was a good job we did.

Getting TO/AROUND: Having only travelled to Amsterdam by plane and coach - I have never actually arrived at Centraal Station. It has regular connections with key cities in Germany, Belgium and France as well as larger towns and cities in other parts of the Netherlands. Just outside the station are the trams #4, #9, #16 #20, #24, #25., as well as buses and taxis.

The photo was taken at dusk - from PrinsHendrikkaade.

Maria, I am in the process of regrouping all A'dam restaurants by name (VT-staff request). I noticed an "s" too many at your Porto Carrara tip. PJ
