The Hard Rock Cafe
The Hard Rock Cafe - great music (not live) great food/drink and fun, friendly staff. A great place to start your evening. A couple of drinks and a pudding came to about 17E.

Address: MaxEuweplein

The Paradiso
We saw two Irish bands, BelX1 and The Frames here at Paradiso. Tickets were 20E, but like all music venues in Nl it seems that you have to buy membership to them as well as purchasing your ticket. At Paradiso membership costs 3E for a month long ticket.
Dress Code: Anything.. but even when dressed casually, Amsterdammers are quite trendily stylish, so dress according to the gig you are attending I guess.
Directions: Weteringschans - just off the Leidseplein

We came to this small venue situated away from the centre of the city to see The Rifles. We ended up seeing a great local band called Moss who were performing live on the radio (3FM) and were interviewed by DJ Eric Corton.
It is a tiny venue but a great place to meet locals! Open Wednesdays 10pm til 1pm. (Last tram back to the city centre is at ten past 12 so be warned!)

Boom Chicago at the Leidseplein Theatre is not a "quiet evening out" - expect to participate in the riotous activities of the performers (and be videoed doing it!!!!) It is hilarious (when it's happening to someone else hahahahah!) You should pre-book your tickets as it gets completely packed. We booked for "Rock Stars" Friday Late Nite (doors open 23.00pm) and paid 17.50E.

We had a great night seeing this fabulous new band and their support act - Ian Archr - an Irish solo singer/guitarist.
We were a bit worried that not many people would turn up but as it was the place was packed and the music was great and everyone had a good time.
Tickets cost 10E - but if you are lucky a nice friend might pay for you :)) I think you need to to buy a monthly pass to get tickets for gigs here. Check the website for more info.

Just round the corner from our hotel we found De Saloon Bar. A very small, wedge-shaped pub frequented mostly by locals watching the footy (Juventus vs Feyenoord). Here it seems beer and chips are the order of the day - but the friendly chef/barman will be happy to oblige with whatever ingredients he happens to have - he makes a great bowl of vegetable noodles - as long as you remember compliment him on his hat making skills :)) Oh and the cheese and pineapple toasties aren't bad either.
