Getting TO/AROUND: I flew to Vienna with the wonderful Austrian Airlines. Great service (food/snacks have to be paid for) but tea and coffee are complimentary with a free chocolate wafer.

I really enjoyed this flight as they show the plane's route on a screen above your seat so you know exactly where you are, the altitude, speed, temperature etc etc. at any given time.

On the way out there I chatted to a very nice and helpful Austrian girl who told me about the CAT train (it actually sounded like the C80 train -so there was a little bit of confusion - but only for a minute :))

Getting TO/AROUND: Getting around Vienna on the underground system is VERY easy - the lines are numbered 1-6 and are different colours. Buy your ticket at the machine - an adult single is 1.5E. The ticket machine is also in English.

Check the website for more information regarding 24 hr and 72 hr and 8 day tickets for travel in Vienna.

Getting TO/AROUND: It's very important that after you buy your ticket you remember to get it punched/stamped at this blue box at the entrance to the tube. Tourists have been known to be fined 60E for not having a stamped ticket!

Getting TO/AROUND: I was very surprised at how easy traveling around Vienna city centre was. It seems that people will travel very short distances by tram or tube - and the distances between stops is very short too! To me it hardly seems worth the wait for public transport but because it is so cheap and so regular... why not use it ?

I took the tram from Loewengasse to Schwedenplatz for 2E. I could have walked it but the tram was coming. You buy your ticket from the machine on board and stamp it in the same machine.

    Transportation: Landstrasse - Wien Mitte

Getting TO/AROUND: This is the central station in Vienna where all tube lines run through (Not U6) and the City Air Terminal (CAT) arrives and departs from. It is also the Metropolitan station for overground trains S1,2,3,7,and 15.

Remember it has two names 'Landstrasse' AND' Wien Mitte'. Even some locals weren't sure when I asked "Is Landstrasse also Wien Mitte??"

Getting TO/AROUND: As I didn't see the city by bike I am not sure about costs and timings etc, but it seems that it is very easy to pick up a bike at various locations around the city and leave it at another. If I was staying longer and the weather was good it is certainly a method of transportation I would consider taking.

Getting TO/AROUND: I saw lifts in most tube stations I used, for the elderly, disabled, passengers with luggage and the just plain travel weary. What a wonderful system they have here!!!

Getting TO/AROUND: On Saturday evening Petra and I found our way to Suedbahnhof and took the 18.50 'S' train (Suburban railway) to Bratislava. It takes about 1 hour to travel 60km to the former 'Pressburg' capital of Slovakia. Tickets cost 14E return and the last train to Vienna from Bratislava is 10.23pm.

Remember you will need your passport as the police board the train checking passports there and back. You will also need to exchange your money into Slovakian Korun as the Euro is not accepted currency! (And it's best to try to think about these things before you begin your journey ;))

Thanks Maria for bringing back sweet memories out of far 1996 when I happened to visit this beautiful city! It's one of the most wonderful place in Europe, indeed! Time to revisit I think...
