Famous site of the Battle of Hastings where William conquered Harold's Saxon army in 1066. Now it's a peaceful Sussex market town.
In 1085 William commissioned the Doomsday Book - a survey/census of the entire country was taken - a vast undertaking at that time where every little lowly croft and hut and their inhabitants were counted. Read more about this ancient and historic book at this site:
Domesday Book
- Pros:Pretty, quaint, historic
- Cons:expensive, busy.
- In a nutshell:Worth a visit if you are in East Sussex

I've had many enjoyable visits to Battle but none so far for Bonfire Night. I know what you mean about all that money going up in smoke, but your photos have captured the fireworks so well :-)
Ah, Battle of Hastings and Doomsday Book - school memories come back :-))
yep - i agree abut fireworks - used to live close to the showground and for 2 weeks every year every night - fireworks - got boring
Fabulous firework pictures. You seem to have found a good selection of tea-shoppes !
Thanks Maria, now I know that the battle in Hastings really occured in Battle! Battle Bonfire Night is something very special as well. Never heard about such a custom... Very interesting!
official site of pilgrims rest is www.pilgrims-battle.co.uk :)
That railway station looks more like a church to me, but I guess everything does in that part of the world. Glad you gave that poor stranded fellow a ride. I actually toured the battlefield at Battle once, at the behest of my then-ten-year-old son.
Thanks for the up to date service about the 5th of November customs... on your page built on the 5th of November ...well done .... :-)
Fabulous photos from the Bonfire night! That fire looks big enough to keep the whole county warm!
I like bonfires, too. I think I have been to Battle when I was in Hastings.
