Lord Dowding Monument - Tunbridge Wells

Lord Dowding Monument

Calverley Park

Favorite thing: Memorial to Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding - who once lived within the park grounds .

Many thanks for this recent information from Silksheen regarding this monument: "The memorial stone is Scottish granite as he was born in
Moffat where the first memorial was built in 1972. In October 1988, the Queen
Mother unveiled a statue to Lord Dowding in front of the RAF Church, St Clement
Danes, Strand, London.
Had Dowding not planned his unique air defence system (still used today) and
built up RAF Fighter Command from 1936 with victory in the Battle of Britain in
1940 that was the turning point in the war in Europe, England and Europe would
not have the freedom we have today."

More historical info can be found at the Tunbridge Wells Museum site.

The Opera House - Tunbridge Wells

The Opera House

The Opera House

Favorite thing: The Opera House must have once been a grand place frequented by well-to-do, patrons of the arts of Tunbridge Wells - but is now a Weatherspoons (chain) pub/restaurant. C'est la vie.

88 Mount Pleasant Road

Tel: 01892 511770

Fondest memory: There's an interesting mix of architectural styles in this town.

King Charles the Martyr Church - Tunbridge Wells

King Charles the Martyr Church

Church of King Charles The Martyr

Favorite thing: Lots of little interesting churches in the area are worth investigating further if you have time, which unfortunately I didn't.

The King Charles the Martyr website has the following history:

"This church began as the first permanent building in Tunbridge Wells. Before 1678 there was no village here, nor name on any map."

Fondest memory: Lots of interesting historic buildings.

Town Hall - Tunbridge Wells

Town Hall

The Town Hall and the Heritage Walk

Favorite thing: 2006 is a very special year for the Kent county town and to commemorate the 400 years since the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in T.Wells, the Borough Council have created a Heritage Walk throughout the town. Click the Heritage Walk link for further information.
