As a lover of the work of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), I couldn't pass up a trip from Hamburg to Magdeburg without stopping for an hour or two in Uelzen to see this unique railway station. The station is also special because incorporated in the roof are solar panels. It is one of the largest solar plants in Northern Germany. Hundertwasser designed his buildings to be ecologically sound and environmentally friendly as well as artistically pleasing with the use of colour, columns and very few straight lines! hundertwasserbahnhof |
| | The station interior contains (on two levels) a cafe, travel shop, gift shops and an art shop .. all of course in the same Hundertwasser style. |

alucas Sun Nov 18, 2007 18:41 UTC I don't know about the concert hall, but it reminds me of some of Gaudi's work. | yumyum Sun Sep 2, 2007 09:25 UTC What a lovely railway station! Unfortunately, it's a bit far away coming from Switzerland. | globetrott Fri May 11, 2007 21:37 UTC great to see another work of art by F. Hundertwasser, I like his way to arrange old and broken remains of various tiles that it looks like geniune art ;~) | hunterV Sat Jan 27, 2007 17:37 UTC UR right about the unusual art there! I have only passed Uelzen by bus on the way home, never known it was so unique... |
