Things To Do: Mosques and gubbas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nowadays when so many Sudanese are working abroad, especially in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, every village has a mosque built by their expatriate sons. The style of mosque varies from place to place.
Sometimes the village will have a gubba too- a conical shaped tomb in memory of a holy man or sheikh. These are very noticeable from the road, and indicate a village is ahead.

  • Al bagair was the first industrial area in Sudan about 42 km outside Khartoum. It was a complex of industries related to agriculture whether milling, canning, bottling cola, or other agriculture related
    produce.
It is set back off the main road in a flat plain, so only the gleam of metal constructions are visible from the road. Inside there are factories and housing for the employees.
Advertising hoardings also abound approaching Bagair.

Shane- interesting page on this unknown (to me) place. The scorpion & cemetary tips are particuarly interesting. However- from your shopping tip-well-I would NOT be tempted to buy spare parts & tyres lol!

Interesting mosques and gubbas. The cemeteries look different from the European ones, but do we need anything more after death? I didn't realise travelling on Sudanese roads can be so dangerous, and when I think of the scorpions... Interesting updates.

Learnt more of life in Sudan after reading this page. Thanks for sharing. At least, it is easy to play football so much open space.
