Kordofan is divided into 3 parts now : North Kordofan. South kordofan and West Kordofan.
It has few tarmac roads and scattered towns and villages. Apart from rain fed agriculture in wadis [dry river beds] and the seasonal grasses that provide grazing for the herds of animals. Some of the people are still nomadic or semi-nomadic., and consider themselves "arabs".

The main towns are El Obeid [El Ubayyid], Bara, Umm Ruwaba, En Nahud.

Gum arabic

Gum arabic is one of the major products exported by Sudan.Acacia trees that produce gum arabic, an important product exported for manufacturing medicines, confectionery, paints, cosmetics and drinks , to name but a few, are cultivated throughout the region..
When the trees are reading to be tapped, growers using tradition ives on sticks, slash the tree to initiate the extrusion of the gum which forms into large globules.

When the rainy season comes the desert blooms. Plants come to life, fish fill the pools that appear, and birds come in flocks attracted by the water.

I certainly prefer the desert after the rains when nature comes alive. Lovely pictures of egrets and the water lilies.
