The Gezira

by uglyscot - last update: Mar 16, 2006

The flat Gezira landscape
The Gezira refers to the area between the Blue and The White Nile south of Khartoum. It is a large fertile plain of clay soil. It was divided into small farms under the Sudan Gezira Scheme when the country was under British administration. A system of canals crosses the plain.
The main crops are cotton, sorghum, ground nuts, wheat and vegetables.
The chief town of the area is Wad Medani.

the river at El Hassaheissa
El Hassaheissa lies on the west bank of the Blue Nile. It is important because of the textile factory, and the ferry across the river to Rufaa.

What an interesting page! Hope you manage to take some close-ups of the settlers and their villages. The gubbas look very unusual in this landscape.
