Kition or Kiti as it is called is an old village, once the chief village in the area.It is about 14 km west of larnaca. It was famous for the birth of Zeno, the philosopher.
Also the Church of the Virgin Mary built by Angels is a much visited church. Inside are many priceless icons. I remember that of Saint Anthony. and the famous mosaic portrait of the Virgin and child

In the church grounds is an old well, once typical in Cyprus. Instead of a handle at the side to haul up a bucket, there is a contraption on top that is turned round to lower the bucket on its rope.

The mosaic of the Virgin Orans here at Kiti is so beautiful - well worth the detour. Lovely photos of the church and surrounds. leyle

I have to visit Kition on my next trip to Cyprus. I have been there many times but this time I will not miss Kiti. Thanks for sharing.
