Romantic Bath

by uglyscot - last update: May 21, 2009

From the Romans to Regency times

The Canal at Bath
Having read all Jane Austen's novels, and a lot of Georgette Heyer's too, the town of Bath ,though I had never actually been there , was familiar to me So when a friend went looking for somewhere to live on getting a job in Bath, I jumped at the chance to go along too.
Bath is set in a valley and the town extends up the sides of the hills. It is a charming town though an umbrella is a necessity I found at any time of the year.
I was disappointed to find that to enter the Roman Baths was expensive, so most of my visiting was from the outside. However, that omission has now been corrected, and husband and I spent a great time seeing the Bath and the archaeological finds.
Later one of my children went to live in Bath and I enjoyed rummaging through antique shops which are plentiful, not that I ever bought anything, but there are a lot of nice things to be had.
The shopping area is adequate though most of the roads are steep when you want to return home carrying lots of bags!

Bath is built in a valley so much of the town is built on the slopes of the hills, which is hard on the legs!
Most of the buildings are built of the honey coloured stone. Thus, when you drive down into the city you see the rows and rows of houses climbing up the slopes- all golden in the sunshine.

Things to do

There is Victoria park where a lot of activities take place, including flights in hot air balloons.
The Royal Crescent must be seen, and the Circus too, both models of Georgian architecture.
Much of the shopping area is a pedestrian zone , and easy to get around. The Podium is an enclosed market area. Nearby is The Abbey which is well worth a visit, and ,of course, the baths, the Pump Room [now a restaurant] with its elegant interior and delicious teas.

Bath was a fascinating place. Wish I had more time there. Loved the deer. We had friendly deer in a herd in Dublin park.

My friend and I also had tea at the Pump Room a few years ago, it was one of the highlights of my trip to England - I couldn't believe I was standing in the same room where Jane Austen had once stood :o)

I visited the Roman Baths during my half day in Bath many years ago and we had a fantastic guide there at the time, not just an audio one. Very good tips and introduction and excellent updates.

Somehow I missed Longleat House on my visit to Bath years ago. Must go again sometime.
