Capital of the Highlands

by uglyscot - last update: Sep 4, 2008

Once a quiet Highland city, Inverness is now one of the fastest developing towns in Scotland. Each time I visit there has been another major change, another new shopping centre... but it still maintains its charm.
The main shopping area is pedestrian friendly, and it is only a short way from the castle.

There is a pleasant walk along the river and the islands.
Moon rising over Kessock Bridge in the rain

Kessock Bridge

The Kessock Bridge is a suspension bridge built about 20 years ago. It leads onto the Black Isle and from there tourists can more easily travel north via the Cromarty Firth Bridge and the Dornoch Firth Bridge, saving hours and miles, but missing interesting places like Beauly and Dingwall in the process.
For locals it is invaluable.
The picture shows a low full moon over the bridge on a night when it was raining cats and dogs!
Inverness lies on the sea and sprawls out under and up a small hill. It has a football club that has entered the football league {Inverness Caledonians , "Caley"]. The stadium lies by the sea as you come off the Kessock Bridge. There is Inverness College where many of the students from the area and beyond go after completing school.
Eden Court is a cultural centre where films, plays, art exhibitions and concerts are held.
It is also a good centre for touring the Highlands of Scotland

I stumbled over a big hole in my history classes lately when I first (yes, it's a shame) heard and read from Culloden. I was in Inverness and did not know about it. Now, reading your tips, I would like to go back and see.
